Blog post #1 May 31st 2024 by Rowdy Claycomb

This summer, my blog posts will focus on everything related to rangelands. Rangeland ecology and management is what I got my undergraduate degree in and is something I’m very passionate about. I plan to make posts about a wide variety of things. Having people follow along with some of my work adventures this summer will be enjoyable. I work as a fuels technician for the BLM based out of Boise. This summer, we are working on a handful of projects centered around rangeland vegetation and how best to manage the landscape for fire and ecosystem health. The first posts will likely be about some of the prescribed burning near South Mountain and Juniper Mountain in Owyhee County. In addition to prescribed burns, we are working with ranchers along Interstate I-84 between Boise and Glenn’s Ferry to use grazing as a fuel reduction method to prevent wildfires ignited by vehicles. These projects generate various informational maps and visuals that we share with the public to help explain what we are doing on their public lands. These visuals would make great discussion pieces for the blog.

Along with my work adventures, I would like to share interesting articles about rangeland ecosystems and their management. I hope to find various scientific papers on prevalent management and science issues to discuss and make posts about. In addition to scientific articles, I will share different recreation events on the range that can get people outside and involved in nature. Many fun events occur on public land that most people never find out about.

In general, this blog will discuss the use, management, and general state of rangelands in the West. There will also be some fun personal experiences and interesting scientific literature sprinkled in the mix. I’m not sure what it will look like yet, but I look forward to it!

I look forward to reading everyone else blog posts. If you have any suggestions or critiques, please let me know!

Best,
